The System

The system is described as:
A non-load bearing facade and packing system of the main carrying construction for buildings based upon a core of EPS. The EPS is covered up with mortar and mesh to protect the core and to provide the required strength. Any finishing render desired can then be applied.

Accordingly, the EPS is wrapped around a wooden, steel or concrete frame, simultaneously protecting the frame, acting as a perfect insulator and forming the façade layer to which different skin materials can be applied. These finishing materials can be drawn from traditional methods such as: plaster, mud, stone-strips, paint, wood, etc. Veerhuis has a strong preference for the Light Weight Steel( LWS) frame

A Veerhuis is built in 5 steps.

Step 1
A frame of LWS is built. The frame gives the house his strength which is equal to a traditional house.

Step 2
The EPS walls are placed into the LWS frame. The EPS provides a very good insulation which decreases the energy consumption of the house and guarantees a comfortable temperature in all seasons.

Step3
A special Veerhuis mortar is applied on the EPS walls. This gives the walls their strength equal to a traditional house wall.

Step 4
The roof is placed .followed by the windows, the doors and the other facilities.

Step 5
Finishing the wall (plaster, paint, tiles, wood strips, stone strips), so that the house looks like any other house.

The frame is encapsulated in the wall and the same is the case with the electrical wiring system, the water pipes, the plumbing and draining pipes etc

This house( 80 m2) can be constructed within 7 days by 4 laborers.
The Veerhuis Housing Concept offers solutions for various building types such as:
villas
middle class homes
shelter homes
holiday homes
multi storey homes
floating homes
offices (of any height, but best up to 4 storey’s)
schools, hospitals ,factories

Frame
LWS ( light weight steal)
In spite of the proven fact that the Veerhuis Techniques/system with EPS fits all existing present-day frame building systems (steel, wood, concrete, natural stone) , the preferred frame material for Veerhuis is Light weight steel (LWS), because:

it has  the highest strength to weight ratio of any building material.
it is resistant against earthquakes, strong winds, extreme heat and cold.
it will not deteriorate over time.
it does not rust.
it is durable.
it is reusable.
it is recyclable.
it is easy to handle.
it is faster to install.
it is 40% lighter than wood.
the profiles can be produced on site.
it does not burn.
it is environment friendly.
it saves our natural resources for future generations. (See Vision

EPS

EPS ( Expanded Polystyrene ) is the most efficient insulator and a leader where it concerns the environment. It is may be the only oil derivate which actually helps to protect our environment and saves natural resources (See Vision). The enevironmental footprint of producing EPS is minimal in comparison to how much energy is saved during the entire operational life of the building, the construction and the demolition. And Veerhuis has now proven that it is an ideal full fledged building material.

The material is:
- light in weight, easy to handle, simple to transport, makes heavy machinery superfluous
- strong
- resistant to frost
- 100 % recyclable and reusable
- it does not disintegrate or rot.
- it is safe
- it is not hygroscopic
- is self extinguishing in case of fire ( fire resistant)
- it has no caloric value for bugs, rodents or termites
- it inhibits the growth of micro organisms and mould (aspergillus negra)
- it is ozone friendly
- it has no smell and releases no harmful substances (fhenol, formaldehyde, radon)
- no dust, no fibres
- it is not toxic, causes no allergies, is not carcinogenic
- EPS is 95 % air
- it is relatively cheap.

Other advantages of working with EPS:

- you do not need highly trained workers
- it is easy to handle
- there is no need for expensive tools
- it is gender friendly
- it lends itself to a very rapid construction ( 3-4 times faster!)
- extensions in all directions are possible and easy.
- it causes less health problems to the labourers
- it reduces traffic and heavy transport
Has a strong positive environmental impact

Mortar
Veerhuis has developed its own high quality mortar which adheres very well to the EPS and needs none or very little maintenance.
